About Wanaka
Wanaka is a town in the Central Otago region of the South Island. It is situated at the southern end of Lake Wanaka, adjacent to the outflow of the lake to the Clutha River. It is the gateway to Mount Aspiring National Park. Wanaka is primarily a resort town but has both summer and winter seasons and is based around the many outdoor opportunities.
 
Wanaka is one of the few areas in New Zealand to enjoy a continental climate, with four distinct seasons. The weather is fairly dry with spring (September-December) bringing the wettest months. Annual rainfall is 682 mm which is half the national average. Wanaka experiences hot dry summers where the temperature can reach the high 30's but averages 24°C. Winter tends to have clear calm days with highs around 10°C.

Wanaka is accessible by road from Queenstown from the south and Greymouth via Haast Pass from the north. Wanaka also enjoys a domestic airport and the nearest international airport is located in Queenstown.

Lake Wanaka

Lake Wanaka itself is popular for waterskiing, wakeboarding and sailing. This along with the local rivers provides many opportunities for fishing.
 

Winter Activities

Wanaka is boasts one of the best winter ski resorts. The stellar terrain makes for fun, reliable skiing all winter. The Southern Alps that surround Wanaka are also renowned for heliskiing and heliboarding.
 

Summer Activities

Wanaka is host to some of New Zealand's best outdoor recreation with world-class mountain biking, hiking, rock climbing, mountaineering, fishing, paragliding, and water sports of all kinds. With one of New Zealand's sunniest climates, Wanaka is truly an adventure paradise. Mount Aspiring National Park is very popular for the mountaineering and hiking options. Haast Pass

Haast Pass is a mountain pass in the Southern Alps of the South Island. This pass has a road from the east to the west over the Southern Alps. Thunder Creek Waterfall
