Rotorua is a city on the southern shore of Lake Rotorua in North Island. Rotorua is well-known for geothermal activity. There are a number of geysers, notably the Pohutu geyser at Whakarewarewa, and hot mud pools located in the city, which owe their presence to the Rotorua caldera. Rotorua won the "New Zealand's Most Beautiful City Award" in the year 2002 and 2006. The Rotorua district has a multi-cultural population of approximately 70,000 people. Around 35% of Rotoruans are Maori making it the densest habitation of New Zealand’s indigenous Polynesian Maori people.

Rotorua is well connected by state highway from Auckland, the commercial capital and Wellington, the political capital of New Zealand.
