Greymouth is the largest town in the West Coast region on the
South Island. The town's major industries include fishing, mining, forestry, and ecotourism. Greymouth has a history of coal and gold mining. When the mining industry started to decline, forestry became a new staple industry. Fishing has long been important to the town. |

Usually tourists take Tranz Alpine Rail journey to Greymouth from
Christchurch which returns back to
Christchurch in the evening. The journey will have a lunch break at Greymouth. Also, the western coast of
South Island gets heavy rain fall through out the year, hence wet clothing is always a must. |
