New Zealand AirportBy Air

New Zealand being one of the remotest destinations, most of the air routes are long haul except for visitors from south eastern region of Australia. European and Asian visitors fly via one of the transit hubs in South East Asia such as Singapore, Bangkok or Hong Kong. Visitors from American continent fly via Japan. New Zealand has four major international gateways, two in each island. All the airports have a departure tax ranging from NZ$20 to NZ$25 depending on the airport. The tax can be paid in cash or any international credit cards.
 

Auckland has the largest International airport in the whole of New Zealand making Auckland the most connected cities of New Zealand to the rest of the world. All major International carriers serve flights to Auckland. Auckland International Airport (AKL) is located in Mangere 14 miles (22 km) south of Auckland. New Zealand’s flag carrier Air New Zealand is the major flights operator out of Auckland. Other airlines serving flights to Auckland include Air Pacific, Air Vanuatu, American Airlines, Japan Airlines, Korean Airlines, Lan Chile, Lufthansa, Malaysia Airlines, Mandarin Airlines, Ansett Australia, Ansett New Zealand, Britannia Airways (charter flights), British Airways, Canadian Airlines, Cathay Pacific Airways, Eagle Air, EVA Air, Garuda Indonesia, Mount Cook Airlines, Polynesian Airlines, Qantas Airways,  Singapore Airlines, Solomon Airlines, Thai Airways, and United Airlines.
 

Christchurch International Airport is located six miles (10 km) northwest of Christchurch and served by Air New Zealand, British Airways, Japan Airline, Korean Airlines, Singapore Airlines Qantas Airways and Malaysian Airways. Queenstown International airport serves flights to various destinations in Australia from Queenstown. Because of the length of its runways, Wellington International Airport cannot handle the large long haul aircraft. But, it does service flights from Australia (about three hours away). It is located five miles (eight km) southeast of town and served by Air New Zealand and Qantas.

 

By Sea

There are no regular services that fetch passengers to New Zealand by sea. However there are some charter services provided by yacht operators from Australia and nearby pacific countries like Fiji. Also, some luxury cruise liners do make stops in few of the ports.
 

Travel Documents & Immigration

Entering New Zealand is hassle free provided you have all the necessary travel documents and visas in place. Visitors from most of the countries do not need a visitor visa as long as the passport is valid for six months. Check with New Zealand immigration for more details on visa requirement and fee for respective countries. Getting Around

New Zealand RoadBy Car

The best way to get personal with New Zealand is renting a car. New Zealand roads follow right hand side driving like in United Kingdom. Any international licenses are accepted for driving. There are many local and international brands providing car rental services. With so much to see and do in New Zealand, the car rental deals get better when you sign up for longer rental period. For family adventure, you can hire campervans or motor homes to save on accommodation. You can hire accessories such as GPS system for self navigating New Zealand at an added price. Alternately you can also pick graphical and informative area maps available in all the information centers across New Zealand. Gas or petrol stations are located across all the highways and accept all major credit cards. When you hire the vehicle go through the insurance terms and conditions. Understand the liabilities, fine lines, third party coverage etc.

By Bus
The major cities like Auckland and Christchurch has metro bus system to explore around. There are a few free shuttle services looping the down town area catering the visitors. New Zealand has a very good network of roads connecting places. There are many coach operators that connect these places. Intercity coach operator is the major player in this business with a huge fleet of bus and connecting almost all the destinations.
 

Tranz Scenic RailwayBy Rail

New Zealand has few of the most scenic rail routes in the world. However railway is not the normal mode of transportation among New Zealanders. The existing rail routes are mainly for tourists. The Overlander Rail route connects Auckland to Wellington. This is mostly used by tourists exploring North Island. The Three of the four scenic rail routes are located in South Island. The Tranz Scenic Rail serves between Christchurch and Greymouth via Arthur Pass. Being one of the most scenic rail routes in the world, the Tranz Scenic Rail journey is one of the most preferred among traveler itineraries. The Tranz Coastal Rail serves between Christchurch and Picton via Kaikoura. Visitors to Kaikoura whale watching experience find this journey as an added complementary experience. Also, visitors traveling from North Island to South Island usually take Tranz Coastal Rail journey from Picton to Christchurch.  There is a scenic rail journey from Dunedin called Taieri Gorge Railway.
 

By Ferry

Visitors traveling between North Island and South Island can take the ferry service from Wellington to Picton or visa versa. The ferries are also equipped to carry motor vehicles of various types and sizes.
